Eligibility
•Must be a citizen or national of the United States
•Must be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions)
•Must be receiving any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that you will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during your study abroad program or internship
•Must be a dependent child or spouse of active duty military personnel of the U.S. Armed Forces (including Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, Space Force, or Reserve/National Guard when activated for more than 30 consecutive days)
•Must be applying for or accepted into a credit-bearing study abroad or international internship program
•Must be studying or interning in a country or area with an overall U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2
Details
The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Named in honor of the late Senator John S. McCain, this program provides awards for child and spousal dependents of active duty military personnel to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. The scholarship enables military dependents to gain international experience, develop language skills, and acquire global competencies critical to their academic and career development.
Financial Benefits
•Awards of up to $5,000 to cover study abroad or international internship expenses
•Funding may be used toward eligible study abroad program costs including tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, and international airfare
